Take a few sheets of chipboard ( exactly 4 to be precise) throw in a sheet of Kraft Card stock and 2 12 x 12 sheets of your favorite paper. Some paint, distress stains, distress ink,, Quick Dry Glue, a few yards of X-press It Tape and some dry time and lookie what I came up with! Its not perfect LOL but It works!
I started out with an idea lol. I cut 3 sheets of 12 x 12 chipboard down to 3 x 12 strips.
Later I had to cut another 1/4 inch off each because I needed them a bit narrower. WHICH worked out great as I needed the strips to run along the back “wall” of the shelf…
2 of the 2.75 x 12 inch strips I cut into 7/8 inch strips to run on each side of the shelf. The long narrow strips I trimmed off before now got glued to the back wall.
I used Kraft Card stock to hold it all together along with X-press It Tape.
I used Walnut Stain Distress Stain to color the sides and top and bottom of the shelf. I didn’t want to waste my Stain so I painted the back with a brown paint I had. I forgot to take a photo here so just go with me that it got painted lol.
I used Tim Holtz Kraft Resist paper to cover the out side of it. (Anyone else not end up being a huge fan of this paper? It was kind of ‘eh if you ask me).
Here I am painting the shelves. Use LIGHT layers of paint as you don’t want to warp the chipboard. ALL parts of this air dried. It took longer but I find that if you use your heat gun on damp chipboard it shrinks. NOT what I wanted to happen here lol
I used Walnut Distress ink on all the cover papers, sprayed with water to have it blend into the paper and also let that air dry. I’m tellin ya.. air drying may take longer but the effect is better. I think adhered it it down with X-Press It Tape and ATG tape as a filler.
Up went the sides and I started laying the shelves in. I put 1/8 inch score tape along the narrow strips of chipboard on the back wall to help hold the shelf in place. I used Quick Dry glue on the sides to hold everything firm as I find Quick Dry Glue holds the best when using it like this.
Close up so you can see how the shelves rest on the narrow strips on the back wall. I knew I wasn’t going to be able to put supports between each ink pad to help with the sag because I wanted to make this out of 12 x 12 chipboard so I figured the strips down the back would have to do. Worked pretty good. Slight sag on a couple of them but nothing I cant live with.
Glued up the other side and weighted it down to dry.
Here is the top of the box once its all dry. I thought it needed some fru fru so….
I added some decorative corners punched out of Kraft Card stock using the Martha Stewart Framed Dots border punch ( My personal Favvvvorite border punch of hers). These were also colored with Walnut Distress Stain and then adhered on with 1/8 inch Scor Tape.
Here is a shot from the front. Didn’t realize how much you could see the score tape till I took the photo. Of course once all the pads are in you cant but anyways lol.
Another shot from the side.
And wa la! ON and in fairness its not as crooked as it looks lol My labels are just on crooked LOL
I think it turned out great!
Super happy with it! Fits on my shelf just great. Well balanced as it doesn’t try and tip when I pull out an ink and best of all my pads are no longer stacked on each other so it makes it super fast to grab and go!
Thanks for peeking!!
